Mad Goat Lady

And getting madder by the day!

Septic Arthritis and Golden Staph.

Posted on September 9, 2008 - Filed Under Health

Just like my Rhuematologist said, I guess you are all getting the idea by now that I don’t do things by halves…LOL!

As requested I am posting some pics (sorry they are a little dodgy but they are from Cal’s phone) of my septic, staph infected big toe. Not long after these photos were taken it was opened and drained and the wound debrided…ouch!

Yes it was/is very painful although the pain is easing a little each day thank goodness.

The most painful and distressing part of the whole experience was when I was taken off to theatre to have my central line inserted. The doctor administered a local anesthetic to my right arm to put it there but because I was so ill my veins were shutting down and he couldn’t get it in….so over to the left but with NO anesthetic this time as apparently that makes it even harder to get into dodgy veins. Now I consider myself to be pretty tough but this was the most painful procedure I have ever had before…it felt like a garden hose was being shoved into my elbow and then threaded into my chest. The wire is guided in through that hole and then sits somewhere very close to the heart, when they did this it actually touched my heart and caused me to have a very nasty sensation in my chest and started to pass out. Lying flat and having some oxygen helped that sensation to pass.

I found the whole thing to be extremely traumatic, apparently it is not uncommon to have to have the line re-inserted …if this should happen to me I am going to insist on being asleep next time!

The Orthopedic Surgeon was snapping away taking pictures of my foot like he was a member of the “paparazzi” …apparently he is going to write an article on it for a medical journal.

I will have a world famous big right toe…I always knew I would be famous for something LOL!

The central line sounds awful :( God I hope you don’t have to get that done again. Be good and don’t move too much!

Oh dear - you did do it good. I was feeling bad enough when I had cellulitis here about 18 months ago - cut out the competition and get well soon.

Hi, I am just doing some more research on septic arthritis. I am recovering from it also having come down with it in my knee. I certainly sympathise with you, from the initial pain, treatment and the PICC line to the heart. I must say though, even though my knee looked pretty bad i think you would win the glamour photo shot with your toe:) Anyways, all the best with the recovery, I enjoyed reading about someone elses experiences, NOT THAT I EVER WISH IT UPON ANYBODY. Good luck. Regards Brad
