Y do u do it?
Posted on February 28, 2008 - Filed Under Dont ya just hate....
Is there anything more annoying than text speak..when it is used anywhere else but in a text message?
I dunno bout u but i c red evry time i c sum1 writin (4 want of a betta word) such rubbish.
I will go as far as to say that it can be a very handy tool when you are in a hurry and need to send a quick message but I have to admit to typing almost every word exactly how it is spelled..I think this is more about language habits than anything else.
Anywhere other than in a text a whole load of abbreviations and made up words screams at me, “I am too lazy or incompetent to write this correctly and quite frankly I don’t give a toss!” I have to admit that my eyes glass over and I give it all a miss after a word or two.
With literacy levels continuing to fall I have a feeling that this lazy quasi language has a lot to answer for.
Does it annoy the hell out of you too?

Yes, it definately annoys me greatly. Maybe because I have to think harder to work out what they are saying. My kids laugh at me because even when I am texting I spell and use punctuation. I’m just old I guess.
To be honest, it annoys me in a text also. I take to long trying to remember the abbreviation, so it’s easier just to tap out the words! Ahhh, advanced age . . .
I know!! Always correct spelling and punctuation here..even down to apostrophes :hehe:
Uh oh! Guily as charged! I m 1 of those pepl.
I absolutely loathe text speak. Sometimes it takes me ages to read some of the messages my daughter sends to me! I never use it myself, opting to key in the full words even if it takes longer. It’s no wonder some of the younger generation are so illiterate.
It annoys me too - even in txt some abbreviations
you will never guess what LOLcats has up today

i once read a book written in txt speak, thoroughly enjoyed it, but then, i also got used to the language used in moll flanders quite quickly too! mutating language is a fact of life i think!
good to see another post!
ps do you use the automatic version thing for texting? yeah its called predictive text that’s right!
so, you can get some funny words predicted when you do that … i meant to say “home” not “good”
Though i must say at this point in the day home would be good!!
well maybe if i were more used to reading it, it wouldn’t bug me but frankly, i have a hard time deciphering it. it’s still like hieroglyphics to me.
i hate it too, and i will even text whole words like unfortuately because it’s a point of honour with me!! the only one i use is lol…and
I hate it also - and doubly so when the “letters to the editors” page has an “SMS the Ed” column and its all in gobblydegook!
Yes, because I see my students beginning to adopt these shortcuts in their writing! They aren’t getting the “writing for different purposes/audiences” thing…
And here I thought it was just me! I actually go out of my way to not learn text speak - even when using text communication! And that whole point about literacy is one of my biggest gripes about it. It drives me bonkers!
